Cote D’Ivoire’s Adaye Sosthene Yvan N’Guettia ‘20 is utilizing tools learned at ALA to equip young people in his community to identify opportunities and address challenges effectively. ALA’s BUILD-in-a-box model is his chosen tool to transfer to others as he himself strives to end political instability that plagues his home country. Through the process of tackling the West African country’s socio-economic issues by believing, understanding, inventing, listening and delivering (BUILD) solutions along with his empathetic leadership style, Adaye is set to succeed. ALA provides a world-class environment for young leaders to explore different interests through signature and core courses such as Entrepreneurial Leadership, Writing & Rhetoric as well as African Studies. At the core of our program is Entrepreneurial Leadership which is designed to build the interpersonal and leadership skills that are essential for future agents of positive change on the African Continent. Through this program, students develop the mindset, approach, and practical skills necessary to be entrepreneurial leaders. In their first year. students focus on conceptual frameworks, skills development, and personal growth through leadership coaching. The year culminates in the Original Idea for Development Incubator where students bring to market ideas for change that align with their passions and skills. Their tasks are to identify a pan-African challenge in that sector and design a human-centered sustainable solution. In their second year, students run a for-profit or non-profit ventures on the ALA campus in teams of 5-7 students through the Student Enterprise Program. This program provides the opportunity for our students to put the first-year curriculum into practice by simulating real-life business scenarios as enterprises. These enterprises range from on-campus services, and off-campus services to product services. In this episode learn about the enterprises that offer product services that range from fashion to art.

Ny Ony Razafindratandra '11 is a Malagasy singer, songwriter and performing artist. Publicly known by her stage name, Niu Raza, her music features a blend of African influences, telling diverse stories about the African continent and its people. Jesse Forrester '17 from Kenya and Wuntia Gomda '17 from Ghana designed The Living Machine, a wastewater treatment system which has the capacity to clean 300,000 litres of water annually. This design won the first prize in the Global High Schools Category (Sub-Saharan Africa) at the 2019 Zayed Sustainability Prize. The Living Machine was constructed at African Leadership Academy and commissioned in December 2019. Kamuskay Kamara ’20 has dedicated himself to raising awareness about drug abuse in his native Sierra Leone, his native country, through Young Active Movement, an initiative he founded. His commitment to successfully completing the ALA curriculum as well as networking with other young leaders from across Africa will allow him to explore how he can extend his advocacy against substance abuse to other communities. Kamuskay’s story is similar to those of many of our students who experienced a particularly challenging childhood environment, some from non-English speaking countries. However, his determination to effect change saw him join our program which will equip him with the necessary knowledge and tool to help him succeed.
